The tide commands the city twice a day. Knowing where it will stand is the first task of every morning.

The lagoon breathes two floods and two ebbs a day. When the peak passes 110 centimetres above the Punta della Dogana datum, the siren sounds and the city calls it acqua alta. Piazza San Marco, the lowest ground, floods before the rest, at lower tides already.

The siren is not an emergency alarm: it is a count. The tones that follow say how many decimetres above the expected level. Walkways go up along the main routes, and life continues, in different shoes.

On 4 November 1966 the tide passed 194 centimetres: the day that changed how the city is protected. The answer came decades later: MOSE, 78 mobile gates at the three sea inlets of Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia, raised when the tide passes the threshold. Since the first lifts in autumn 2020 the barriers have kept out the highest tides.

The tide bulletin is public and daily: read it in the morning, and it decides the walk, not only the shoes. The gazette does not reprint forecasts: it sends you to the official bulletin of the city’s tide centre.
