San Marco: la piazza, il palazzo, la basilicaSt Mark’s: the square, the palace, the basilica

The only campo Venice calls a piazza, held together by three buildings.

Piazza San Marco is the only space to which Venice grants the name piazza; every other open ground is a campo or a campiello. It is also the lowest point of the city, the first that high water covers.

The basilica closes the far end: gold mosaics over the portals, a geometric pavement that rises and settles with the centuries, and the Pala d’Oro behind the high altar. The campanile is visible from most of the city: it collapsed in July 1902 and was rebuilt as it was, reopening in 1912.

Palazzo Ducale faces the lagoon, not the square: its Istrian stone facade looks onto the Molo. Inside runs the sequence of the Maggior Consiglio and Senate halls, the golden staircase and, on the far side, the Bridge of Sighs toward the New Prisons.

Between the palace and Sansovino’s library, the Piazzetta opens onto the bacino with the two columns of San Todaro and the lion of St Mark. It is the city’s ceremonial entrance for anyone arriving by water, and where the gondolas line up along the Molo.

For opening times and admission to the monuments of the square, the gazette sends you to the city platform described on the getting around page.
